West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue presented an unclaimed property check in the amount of $4,615.00 to the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department Thursday morning at the 2016 State Fair of West Virginia. The presentation took place in the West Virginia Building at the State Treasurer’s Office exhibition.

“I take my job as custodian of the State’s unclaimed property very seriously. I have a duty to return this money to rightful owners, and I’m exceptionally proud to present a check to an organization whose members volunteer to keep our people safe.”

The VFD funds come from the State Department of Health. No additional information was available about the source of the property.

In addition to the check presentation, the State Treasurer’s Office is focusing on its Unclaimed Property program at the State Fair with six live auctions of unclaimed items. The remaining auctions will be held today, Friday and Saturday starting promptly at 5 p.m. each day at the Treasurer’s exhibit.

The “Flash Auctions” are 15-20 minute events that auction off up to 10 lots during that time.

Just last year, the Treasurer’s Office returned $121,000 in unclaimed property to Greenbrier County residents.

Examples of unclaimed property include safe deposit box contents, forgotten utility deposits or abandoned bank accounts. Treasurer Perdue’s office has returned more than $150 million in unclaimed funds during the course of his administration.

The Treasury does not collect state taxes. Visit the The West Virginia State Tax Department for assistance.
