West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue and the West Virginia Achieving a Better Life Experience (WVABLE) program have recognized a local student for being selected as a winner in the national #ABLEtoSave contest on Facebook.

Hannah Orndorff, a 6-year-old from Charleston, was selected to receive a $100 Gift of Independence gift card as part of contest for #ABLEtoSave, a month-long national awareness campaign from the ABLE National Resource Center and Gift of College.

Hannah, who was born with Down Syndrome, participates in the WVABLE program, a tax-advantaged savings and investment program for people with disabilities in West Virginia. Treasurer Perdue, whose office administers the WVABLE program, presented Hannah with a Certificate of Recognition on behalf of the State Treasurer’s Office Monday.

“Congratulation to Hannah for this recognition,” said Treasurer Perdue. “We know that ABLE accounts here in West Virginia and around the nation are making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities. We are proud Hannah and her family understand the importance of saving, investing and planning for her future.”

To enter the contest, Hannah’s mother, Ashley, wrote about Hannah using money invested in her WVABLE account to purchase learning apps and programs for her new iPad.

“When the schools shut down in March due to health concerns related to COVID-19, we didn't quite know what to do as far as online learning,” Orndorff wrote. “With the government stimulus money, Hannah was able to purchase an iPad to use for her schoolwork! She had savings in her WVABLE to use for learning apps and programs for her iPad as well, and she started this school year right on track!”

WVABLE accounts are made possible by the federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act. The accounts allow many qualifying individuals with disabilities to save and invest without losing eligibility for certain public benefit programs, such as Medicaid and SSI.
