CHARLESTON – State Treasurer John Perdue’s office reminds unclaimed property holders that businesses must file reports by Monday of any unclaimed property they are holding.

Businesses that cannot report timely due to reasonable cause should request an extension from the State Treasurer’s Office, using the form at www.wvtreasury.com.

Unclaimed property is intangible property such as bank accounts, payroll checks, vendor checks, utility deposits and gift certificates in which the business has not had any indication of interest from the owner for a specified time period.

All property in which the owner’s last known address is in West Virginia is to be reported, regardless of whether the business is still operating in the state.

Simultaneous to filing the report, businesses must remit that property to the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office. These stipulations are in accordance with the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, WV Code 36-8-7.

Reports and remittances must be filed electronically. The State Treasurer maintains an Internet site for electronic reporting at www.wtreasury.com. Information can be typed into the online system or files can be uploaded.
